Great Fun but Heavy. Jury is out on the Brakes

Let me start by saying this is my first ebike so I’m completely novice to this sort of thing. However I know bicycles pretty well as my wife and I have seven other bicycles in the garage mostly a combination of road bikes mountain bikes and kids bikes. We have done several triathlons and love riding road, gravel or trails in general. I was not sure at all what to expect with this ebike. First off I’ll say it was fairly easy to assemble. My 14 year old and 11 year old assembled it themselves in about an hour while I was at work. They did a great job I only had to help them with one part. Fully assembled it is gorgeous to look at. The LED touchscreen is bright and easy to see even in direct sunlight. I am not sure the point of the key. It only seems to unlock the battery for removal. The seat does not allow for much adjustment. Mainly up and down there is not a lot of room to pivot forward and backwards or tilt the nose. This lack of customization makes it difficult to pedal long distances. I would not want to ride this any decent distance on a dead battery. That being said though the battery gauge is very prominent and it would be hard to miss if you were low on juice. My biggest complaint is the weight. This thing is heavy, very, very heavy. So heavy that it is difficult to maneuver at low speeds. I consider myself average height and weight and sometimes I found myself focusing more than normal to keep it upright and going the direction I intended when parking and maneuvering at stop lights. I would not advise this for someone with weak legs. At cycling speeds 10 mph or faster it rides like a dream. The extra large tires and front shocks seem to smoothly absorb the bumps. The heavy weight though discourages you from riding it like a regular bicycle. The primary focus of this machine is definitely the e-bike aspect while the bicycle portion is secondary. If that is what you were looking for this is the perfect bike for you. I would personally prefer something I could ride more to get exercise with only the occasional boost. I have also never ridden anything with this large of tires. I know that is the trend as I say many other people are riding ultra fat tires, but I am not sure how useful they are. First of all they are pain to air up. I found it difficult to reach the 30 PSI with a hand pump. This surprised me I figured it would be easier to fill up these giant tires then trying to cram up to 60 PSI in a skinny road tire but boy was I wrong. I really feel like I need to find a power pump to get these tires up to 30 PSI. I ended up giving up about 20 something. The brakes are another weak point on this bike. I have not tried adjusting them yet but I absolutely do not feel they can safely bring me to a stop from a reasonable distance above 20 miles an hour. This bike does have disc brakes but I do not feel they provide adequate stopping power at this point. I understand the app can add 7 miles an hour of speed but I am not comfortable trying this until I can adjust the brakes appropriately. Also I feel like the bottom bracket needs to be lubricated because it or the pedals seem to be squeaking more than I would expect from a brand new bike. All that being said, this ebike is fun. The boost can really quickly get you up to cruising speed. I did find I would probably like one more boost setting. The lowest setting is a little too much boost if you’re still trying to get a little bit of exercise by pedaling. All that being said this is definitely a fun bike and it certainly looks cool with the programmable LED colors on the sides and the paint pattern. I will continue to play around with adjusting the brakes and may seek professional help. I will update if anything changes.

This is Great Quality. Everything Well Made

I will admit right off, I am not an expert on this bike. There are a couple other reviews on here that do a wonderful job of explaining all the technical aspects of this bike and you should read them carefully.I came at getting this bike from the aspect that I had seen people riding bikes like this and was amazed how far they had come and how much better they made biking for not only older people like me but people who use them for commuting and long trail rides. We live in a college town and quality bikes like this are very usable for everyday use.I was really worried if I would be able to put the bike together but it was nearly assembled when it arrived. Just attach the front wheel and handlebars and a couple other small parts and it was done. I downloaded the app and charged the battery and was off and running. The app is easy to use and you can nearly control all aspects of the bike from your phone.I love the big tires. The heavy duty, strongly welded frame and the enclosed battery compartment. This is a quality bike. I feel it is well worth the investment and it’s a blast to ride!

a great option at its pricepoint

I use it to commute to work and to go to the store for quick pick-ups. I’ve put 61 miles on in total – and I think it’s rad. I do worry that it will be stolen quite a bit so I have a pretty heavy duty chain in my cargo bag. In a nutshell, I’m very happy with it on base line performance. The overall design is nice, it looks like a complete product, not a regular bike with an engine and a battery strapped on. It’s just a beautifully designed package. That said, there are a few missed opportunities, and the designers are way ahead of the engineers. Here are the good points:Speed & Battery Range:It’s fast, especially when unlocked. I’ve got it to go up to 32 miles an hour with pedal assist, and I can get about 18 miles of distance with minimal pedal assist. I use the pedal assist to get it rolling and going as fast as possible as soon as possible, then let the motor sustain the higher speed on its own.Safety Features:The disc brakes are great, allowing you to stop at the rate of a motorcycle, and the front fork has a shock system that adds to the braking power and makes the road a lot more comfortable. The 4″ tires give you a lot of road to stick to, and absorb a lot more impact than typical 2.25″ tires. The headlight is very powerful, nearly motorcycle level bright, so you can see just about everything at night with no problems.Gearing:The pedal system is pretty good, with a singular front cog and a mountain bike worthy rear hub so you’re not checking through a bunch of gears and over-operating having to be too concerned with tuning on a daily basis.Other Features:It has a nice build-in kickstand and an almost silly bell, and thoughtful wheel splash guards to keep you and the bike generally clean and safe from debris you might kick up. The app allows you to keep track of your mileage, change lighting options and somehow lock the bike, though I haven’t quite figured out how this might work.I hope to see improvements on the next generation .Speed and Range:It would be nice to have the capacity to add a second battery and double your range. No complaints about the standard battery – it’s right in line with everything else the market offers. To get 45 miles of range, you will need to pedal quite a lot.Safety Features:It does seem odd that there isn’t a brake light, considering the motor does has a sensor somehow related to the brakes. Hitting the brakes stops the motor, so there is an electrical response system built into the brakes, therefore a point of interaction that should be able to operate a brake light. All in all, the body lights make you so visible that it’s not a real safety concern, and brake lights are not standard feature on a bicycle, but they are on a moped, and this is about as fast as a moped.Gearing:From an engineering perspective, I do think it’s geared a little low for the ideal scenario, which is as a commuter bike. I am considering replacing the front cog with something a little higher so I can get more out of my pedaling at higher speeds and potentially increase my distance. In low gear I can’t imagine I’ll ever be in a position to need that much power. It might make sense for some off-road terrain, but for the most part I just can’t see this making sense as a mountain bike with steep inclines – it just doesn’t seem like a suitable application, and the gearing is just kind of an after-thought.Other Features:The app does not seem complete – it’s fairly cumbersome and appears to be made for scooters more than the bike. I’m not 100% sure what some of the features actually do, and some of the lighting features and security features don’t seem to work at all. It seems like it’s still under development, but on the whole, the app is not needed to operate the bike so it doesn’t really impede performance in any way. Missed opportunity in terms of built on cargo rack, but there are options out there. You wll need to look for cargo racks designed to fit a frame that will house a 4″ wheel. The frame is substantially thicker than most bikes as well, therefore it will most likely require some level of adaptation if you want a sturdy cargo rack that can transfer load back down to the frame rather than just cantilevering off of the seat-post. Because the frame is sturdy and ideal for carrying cargo, a built in cargo rack, or just one designed specifically for the bike seems kind of ideal. I managed to find one that allowed me to make use of the mounting points for the wheel guard anchors.Pedal Assist Operation:If there’s anything negative I have to say about bike it’s with regard to the pedal assist operation. The way it works is that it kicks on when the front crank is rotating. You don’t necessarily have to be engaging the rear hub and delivering power, you can just cycle real slow and pedal assist will engage at the same speed it would if you were cycling fast. At the end of the day, what’s really happening is that turning the front crank is operating an on/off switch that tells the motor to go. The amount of power put into the system is determined by the setting of the bike, at level 1, 2, or 3. The the rear wheel will engage at the set strength and you can supply additional power by assisting the engine with additional torque. There is also a bit of lag in the engagement and disengagement process which makes it kind of touchy to ride in a pack and as a result, the pedal assist doesn’t operate well at slow speeds, so if for some reason you need to go slow, just turn off the pedal assist. There is a handlebar button/control that allows you to do this pretty easily.I’ve found the engagement method to be a bit of a nuisance when I downcycle for a stop sign. I typically shift down about 2 – 4 gears so that I have more power to get rolling. To get the chain into the right gearing I have to cycle just a wee bit. This is happening while I’m trying to slow down, actually coasting to a slow down, and since I’m pedaling to get the chain shift to happen, the electric motor thinks its time for accelerating. If the engagement were something that operated according to force applied to the rear wheel through the chain, in a more analog way rather than as an on-off switch signaled through the crankshaft rotation, the results would be a bit more in tune with the operator directives.

    Oaki ranger eb850

Where do I start? The ebike is fun but there’s many problems with the build. 1st off is it says 48 volts and the bike does 45 miles range well 1 month later went from 45 miles to 42 miles so lost range. Amazon says 48 volts on there add well the battery says 47 volts so that’s wrong. The screen is pretty cool. So 1 month later the battery door will not stay closed. Thats nuts. I have a noise in the crank clunking. I haven’t tried to upgrade the speed to 28 I like it at 20 its legal to ride on the street makes it class 2. As soon as u make it to 28mph that changes the class to 3 so thats not good. Doesn’t have quick release on back rim. The breaks r no good they take so long to slow the bike down from 20mph they should have been hydraulic other then that I contacted the company about the battery and the door never hurd back. Be ware when you buy this ebike. And they sell this bike for 2000 on there site. 1100 on amazon thats crazy. This isn’t good. Not a happy customer. I’m still questioning the battery.

A great eBike with a *potential* lousy app limitation

Update: 7/14/2023 – so Okai Support got back to me. The version 3.0.2 app update which came out a few days ago has restored the speed unlock feature on this bike. So my bike has it’s full 28 mph potential now, which is great, I tried it out last night. That being said, I’m likely never going to reconnect the app to my bike again so it can’t strip this feature away in a future app update. Updated my rating from 3 to 5 stars, because this bike truly is good. As originally mentioned, actual rating I’d give is 4.5 stars since there are some design compromises. Primarily, this bike should have hydraulic brakes due to it’s size, weight and price point.Original review:I’ll start with the good. This is one of the best looking eBikes in my humble opinion. The blue color is stunning and the integrated headset with touch screen and in frame RGB LED lights are super cool. It certainly gets people’s attention. The integrated battery is modern and sleek looking despite the very heavy duty frame to go along with the 4″ fat tires. The fenders may be plastic, but they are plenty thick and not flimsy. The headlight is brighter than average, no problems riding at night and has a cool backlight section that faces you. The backlight serves no real purpose other than looking cool. The components are above average for this price tier of eBike. The rear derailleur is a Shimano Altus with 8-speed cassette and matching Altus trigger shifters. The brakes are Tektro Aries mechanical discs with 180mm discs front and rear. The brake levers are also Tektro CL500 made for eBikes with nice rubber padding on the finger side. The left lever also has a trick bell integrated into it. A bike this big would benefit from hydraulic brakes, but as fas as mechanical discs go, these are quite functional and I have no real complaints as they work well. The front suspension fork has adjustable pre-load and lockout which both work as they should. The pre-load knob is stamped RST, so it’s probably an OEM version of their Guide fork. The 26×4 fat tires are great for getting around, they roll very smoothly over everything and eat up the bumps. I like how the tires also have a reflective ring which is fairly unusual. The Bafang motor is as powerful as advertised (750W/1000W peek). I live at the top of a steep hill and this bike can get me up at a 13 mph and I’m 6′, 250lbs. For reference I also have a Hurley Big Swell (NECO 1000W/1200W peak hub motor) and it can only muster 9-10 mph up the same hill. Range, using mostly throttle at near max speed and assist, I’m getting 20+ miles range on hilly roads. More on the motor later.Assembly – the bike came mostly assembled as usual for shipped bikes. The handlebar is pre-wired, just had to attach it to the headset, install the headlight and connect its one plug, install the front tire which includes a quick-release skewer, and screw in the 2 pedals. If you’re comfortable with simple bike maintenance you can put this together. The rear derailleur and rear brake needed no adjustments. The front brake was “fine”, but the caliper was slightly off center (less than 2mm) and I didn’t like how it warped the disc when braking so I realigned it. The battery came with 31% charge, so I was off and running in about 45 minutes total. The tires had air in them, but only about 10 PSI and they need 30. A small handpump is actually included, but I opted to use my full-size pump since the fat tires need a lot of air. The bike also came with a small tool kit with all the crescent wrenches, hex keys and a double ended philips/flat screw driver, so everything you need to assemble the bike and make any adjustments needed. Now for the not so good: The NFC key is basically a gimmick. Can touch the key to the touchscreen to turn the bike on/off. This sounds cool, but there’s a power button on control pad on the left side that always works. Using the key does not disable the power button to “lock” the bike off. Can also turn the bike on/off from the app via bluetooth, again, sounds cool, but not actually useful since the bike can’t be locked out and the power button still always works. The app itself works well and is nicely designed, but doesn’t do anything more than the touchscreen does except being able to switch from imperial or metric units (which is one thing that should just be built into the touchscreen). The only real advantage to the app is that is how you pick the color for the RGB LED lights in the frame. Speaking of lights, the tail light is a battery powered red light only. It’s not powered by the bike nor does it come on with the braking. The MAJOR flaw to this bike is that it is currently locked to 20mph, class 2 eBike! On the Amazon page it says “Top Speed 28mph after unlock with Okai app”. And there are several Youtube reviews and news articles from a few months ago touting this feature being added via an app update. Sounds good, but the feature is currently NOT AVAILABLE. I emailed Okai support and they replied they removed the feature?! That’s a major downgrade and the reason for the 3-star rating. These fat tires, big frame and powerful motor are all built for speed. If you want this bike for commuting, I’d recommend skipping it for a bike that is actually capable of class 3/28mph so you can get to your destination nearly 40% quicker! Example, my Hurley Big Swell defaults to class 2/20mph, but a simple button press combo unlocks class 3/28mph mode. Why can’t this bike? Conclusion: if you’re fine with 20mph top speed, this eBike is an awesome value and looks super cool. Fat tire bikes are all the rage right now. If it could hit 28mph AS ADVERTISED, 4.5 star given the other small flaws which can be overlooked since most every eBike in this price range has some compromises. This bike being crippled to only 20mph knocks it down to 3 stars. C’mon Okai, the ball’s in your court to unlock the speed in this bike again.PS: FYI, Okai is not a household name in the USA, but they have been around the eBike/eScooter game for 10+ years. They OEM manufacturer bikes and scooters for Lime, Bird and others around the world. So they know what they’re doing.

    Best ebike

This has got to be one of the best looking ebikes on the market. Nice performance and power, long range, high quality parts, modern design, integrated screen in the frame, RGB light in the frame, smooth comfortable ride on nice fat tires. No complaints after riding for the last 3 months. App is easy to use and connect a phone to, only draw back is sometimes the phone does not connect unless you are really close, also wish the app could do more customizable things like track routes and calculate miles per ride.

    High Quality E-Bike

I did a decent amount of research and this ebike offered the most premium parts for the money.Main Concerns:Distance can travelSpeed to get thereComfort-abilityQuality of frameQuality of batteriesQuality of MotorThis ebike checked all of those and it also has a custom look/feel to it. I like the built in screen which makes it look sleek complementing the well done blue paint. The ebike was easy to modify to add the extras you really want. I went ahead and changed out the brakes with the HB-100 line pulling hydraulic brakes, added a suspension bar for the a new seat, attached a bike lock to the frame, and new hand grips to accommodate the rear view mirrors. The app by OKAI connects and allows you to change things with ease. You are able to adjust the led lighting and also able to adjust the top speed of the bike. I like the peace of mind as well being able to run a diagnosis of the entire bike through the app.OKAI is a large name in Asia and has a positive reputation for quality products. If you were like me you were overwhelmed with ebikes from companies you could barely pronounce. It’s comforting to know I was able to get a good ebike for a fair price. On top of that and this is the big one……people are scared of these batteries catching fire in their garages. I had the same concern with my family and to know that OKAI is using top quality Samsung batteries eases that concern.

    Best bike ive ever had

I’m not a hardcore biker, i just wanted something for commuting a few miles whenever i need to go somewhere. This bike is definitely worth the money, though my one complaint has to be the brakes, thus the 4/5 stars for this review and not 5/5. They are functional brakes, but not as good as i would like. i hadnt had a situation happen to me yet where i absolutely had to stop but if it does occur i might be in trouble unless i replace these brakes, because in order to come to a full stop from full speed(28mph) i need to know seconds in advance im about to stop. Other than that, the bike has been great, easy to maintain, easy to charge, durable, seems like it really does ignore any type of terrain, can be driven when it is raining or snowing even and months after is still as beautiful as the day i got it.

Won’t upgrade to 28 mph as stated

I received my first bike and it had a few problems. The light worked intermittent. Worked when I assembled it then went to go on first ride and it didn’t work. Then worked the next day every time. The 3rd time it worked some time. Also had a rattle in the frame, ( sounded like a wiring harness inside) when I would turn the handlebars. Not a big deal! After a few rides I had a knocking sound coming from the cranks every time my right pedal was in the 12 o’clock position, and this got much worse in 2-3 rides. I was able to upgrade it to the 28 mph as advertised. Didn’t want to send it back but the noise was really bad. Something was really wrong inside, an it was under warranty. They(Amazon)sent me a new bike the next week, so I had to disassemble the first one to send back to Amazon. Not a big deal but a bit of my time. Assembled the new bike and the light works, no noise from the cranks, but still a small rattle inside the frame near the gooseneck/ handlebar mount. Still not a big deal to me. Tried to upgrade the speed to 28 like I had done on the first one and it wouldn’t upgrade. Spent a bit of time trying to figure it out with support from Okai. Finally received an Email stating that they removed the upgrade for liability reasons. I’m not happy with this bike now because the difference between 20 and 28 mph is a huge difference. I told them that they say on their website that it is upgradable to 28 and never got a response back. I think I’m going to send this one back also and switch to another brand that will do 28. Amazon customer support has been amazing help through all this and was trying to get this handled with me. I like the bike and it looks awesome but if Okai won’t fix this problem I’ll be sending this one back too. I’ve got about another week to return it . I bought the rear rack and basket which will be going back also. BAD BUSINESS in my opinion.

    A great bike.

I’ve had this e-bike for about two weeks now. At first, I was hearing something coming from the frame. I took the handlebars apart. Had to hook up a loose cord. The bike sounds fine now. I like that I can turn the bike on three different ways. I like the speed the bike travels. The seat feels very comfortable. The price is amazing. I would recommend this bike to my family and friends.

Great Bike / Worst Customer Service I have experienced!

This is a great bike, good looking heavy lots of fun ridding. Customer service is the absolute worst joke ever. First, I called Okai, they do not take phone calls, they only do customer service business by e-mail. Each question requires a minimum of 24 hours to respond. So, as you can imagine it can days and weeks to get to the bottom of an issue. My kick stand assembly was broken on arrival, the bike will not stand up. Emailed Okai, took 12 days to get a final response which was that kick stands are only warranted for 7 days from purchase, now I need to purchase the assembly from them, because of their slow communication policy. What a joke, they play games with customers, absolute worst customer service I have experienced from any company. So far, I think the company Okai is a scammer, take your money and run! Beware!

GREAT BUY! STRONG BUILD! BEST LOOKING!

I absolutely love this ebike! From the beautiful paint job, to its sleek lines, beefy frame, very capable looking tires, informative & customizable touch screen without the app being needed…but also an easy to use good app…. and wait for it…. 2 sweet led light strips (of course customizable as well, from the app only)…Full of many Pros and void of any Cons, that is to say I’ve found hardly any at all! (listed down below, but are hardly anything that would factor into a “buy or don’t buy” decision).First of the many Pros… It’s just so much fun to ride! It has multiple ride settings that will get you anywhere from about 20miles to 35-40miles on a full charge! And I have actually ridden those miles! It’s quick.. I mean, 20 to 30 miles per hour on a bike, is fast… But, it’s not uncomfortable speed at all! It’s so perfect imo … The bike is easy to ride, versatile and perhaps most importantly, worth mentioning again… it’s Super Fun to ride! If you are not going to continue reading…. Feel confident in your decision to buy this bike! Click Buy Now!!Okai has done an amazing job with this eBike! So much so, that I also now have the Okai Neon 2 eScooter (which, yes has even more sweet led strips that look amazing at night, but I’ll go into that over on that products review lol)This is my 1st ebike, so with knowing that info, I will tell you that I admittedly don’t have an end user experience with other eBikes for comparison. However, after seeing what was out there, a few reviews here and there, going over specifications and features there and here…. I landed here! The Okai EB50 Ranger Fat Tire! If you are on the fence, go ahead and just ride around it, on your new Okai Ranger Fat Tire eBike! Those tires are fat! 26″” x 4″ and they let you know that right away, the tires do that is… with the white wall like branding on the side .. which I admittedly wasn’t sure I would like … But… upon in person inspection .. actually do! Lol ..Now… It is a heavy bike! Just one look at it and you can see how well built it is. It certainly assets it’s presence! I mentioned the paint job, because it truly is beautiful (imo obviously) I just really like that blue! But, back to the “heavy”.. just be aware that it does come in a box and that box is 100lbs. Now as far as riding or even just walking the bike around, it is like riding or walking a bike around, lol Though, I doubt you’ll see many if any one at all doing bunny hops from a stand still. How heavy the bike is however, once again, does not make for a difficult ride what-so-ever. With one or make that 2 tiny caveats.. IF you were to somehow run out of battery and need to pedal home (which, with the XX miles left info always available right there on that great looking screen…that’d be a tough one to have happen) riding the bike with zero motor assist isn’t really that bad, on flat smooth surface… However, doing so adding hills? Well, going up any Could be… , no… actually would be and will be tough! And the 2cnd being, IF you get a flat tire… Walking it home or back to wherever you need to be .. also , while not an impossible feat… Not going to be the easiest walk with a bike… Throw in a hill or 2 and.. you can probably skip leg day and log the cardio time for that week! LolThe latter, I can personally vouch for as I encountered some sort of metal road hazzard.. didn’t see it, but felt and heard it as I zipped over it on the road… resulting in a flat back tire only 10 seconds later. Now there is an included little hand pump, that while not ideal could be a lifesaver in certain situations. Unfortunately, it was not for me at that time. Luckily I had only gotten about 1 mile at most from home… But it was over an i95 overpass, lol, which meant a decent incline to walk up Was cool out, I was sweating .. a lot! Haha… But, it was doable and certainly not a worse case scenario. Now that leads to inner tube replacement .. immediately I jumped on Amazon and voila, 2 inner tubes , were $24 I believe… slightly upgraded ones even There are inner tubes available for less and quite a bit more even… of course, you get what you pay for being an ever present reality in the world of retail and beyond..so keep that in mind. The tubes I ordered will be here today (4/20/24) so I will add an edit to this with how the swap went later on, presumably this same day I’m posting this review…I definitely highly recommend this eBike. If you are looking and ended up reading all of my ramblings to this point especially . Get it! You will be happy you did! There are so many Pros and honestly few, if any Cons that I have come across yet… 1 Con that I would say, that’s really not … But .. the LED light strips .. they are RGB, you can change the color from the app… But, that’s it you can’t do anything but have 1 solid color displaying at a time..Now IF anyone at OKAI ever happens to see this…. Hey! Great eBike! And this little con but not really a con has an easy . EASY fix! Push out a software update that adds some different lighting effects like on the Neon 2 eScooter, but more (and add more to the Neon 2 also!) that also allows for color cycling … Like, I mean the LED color cycling. Please do this OKAI!! Sooner than later!! Seems silly perhaps, but doing just that one simple thing I would be willing to bet… Would bring in even more buyers! Just based on the RGB capabilities! Not joking, lol.Beyond that, I really haven’t come across anything that I would lust as a con… Maybe the weight, for some .. or the speed for others .. either too fast or too slow… All in All this is really a GREAT EBIKE!! You will be so happy you decided to get one the moment it arrives!!!My name is Michael T, I own this eBike and I approve of my opinion… Lol .. Hope I was able to be of assistance for someone out there! Here’s some Good Vibes to share! Peace!
